What is  a Sugar lift?

It is a process in printmaking that is used to simulate watercolour style brush marks that are then etched into a plate of metal. One of the original recipes used brandy, sugar and ink.

Designs in a syrupy solution of sugar is painted onto the metal surface prior to it being coated in a liquid etching ground or 'stop out' varnish. When the plate is placed in hot water the sugar dissolves, leaving the image. The plate can then be etched.
